Kardi, a RDH graded Danish warm blood mare by Loran born in 1999, arrived as a 4 year old in 2003. Kardi is a very talented mare, lots of movement with a very clean jump. She started her eventing career in the UK whilst we lived there. She took to the UK very easily and soon got used to the steep slopes of the Derbyshire Peak District. In fact she had a couple of great days out traversing the country side jumping stone walls with the local hunt, the High Peak Harriers. That was also great, fun as Jamie’s Godfather Bill Ling, was the long standing Master of Hounds which gave added value to the whole experience.
Kardi soon went Intermediate and had one of her first 2** runs at Thirlestane Castle which was a great success. It was at Thirlestane, that Malene was first introduced to Scottish hospitality. Her first comments on returning from a super round cross country with Kardi were, “you won’t believe what happened! There was a hold on the course so I had to wait a bit at the start box. So the officials offered me a glass of wine!” After that we did get to hear about how wonderful Kardi was. She then went on to compete at Le Lion d’Angers in France successfully.
Consistency seemed to be the thing with Kardi until we travelled down to Poland. We had a really bizarre experience on the show ground with a freak tornado that ripped the front row of stables up into the air exposing around fifty horses to a bout of frenetic freedom. Sadly, the majority were stallions and the carnage created by this marauding bunch was devastating. How anybody wasn’t killed is beggar’s belief. However spurred on by all this excitement, or not, Kardi decided that she could go like a tornado around the cross country. Malene, in her belief that this mare was as fast as Muhammad Ali on acid, did not apply the brakes soon enough through a coffin complex and paid the price dearly. Kardi, regaining her feet, galloped home by herself.
Kardi is, like Bertie her stable mate, is a real character. She is the epitome of a classic tart, always wanting to hang out with the boys! We have had to hang several rubber balls in her stable so that she can “cosy” up with. Otherwise she leans against things like drinkers – which break!
The 2008 season definitely has been an “on-off” one for Kardi. Plagued with a shoulder injury it’s not been her year. Hopefully 2009 will allow her to get out and show her true form.
