Jungleberry - “Bertie “or "Hamster" as he is know at home, was born in Leicestershire England on June the 11th 1998. He was out of a mare that Jamie evented at the time called “Queensberry”. His father was Sandroson. Bertie is very special to us as he is Jamie’s first home bred horse. In fact, taking away his little 13.2hh pony, it's the first horse that Jamie has ever owned himself. However he was left until a four year old before he was broken. Also he stayed entire until 2006, when Malene decided, that the horses were for fun and having a stallion around the place was always going to be a off putter for future baby sitters!
Bertie did not start his eventing career until 2005. A bit of a late starter, but as you can see from his results he has now caught up with his age group. In reality we don’t think that this has been a problem, actually more of advantage as it given all of us more time and less stress on the limbs along the way. He has always been very bold with jump and scope to match. The Hamster certainly has a lot of character – in the early days he was very similar to his mother, renowned for her buck he followed suit, unseating Malene several times. Malene soon ditched her child hood “up the neck” jumping position, as Bertie was very unforgiving if you were slightly ahead of him over a fence! These days he seems to have settled down and only thinks about arching his back after a good holiday. He also is a big softy and always calls out when someone shouts his name.
In the early days Bertie’s problem lay in his show jumping. He frustrated us all as he had so much jump but was always a "tad out" with his timing. He never like to hit them either! But In the 2008 season he seem to have worked it all out and jumped many good rounds of 135. He also went onto compete in the Danish Championships and furthermore, won a team Gold medal in Oslo at the Nordic Championships. His first 3 star in Italy was very impressive and gave Malene great confidence for the future.
As the 2009 season seems to be looming round the corner, Bertie’s plans are been mapped out as this is being written. One of the major disadvantages about living in Denmark, apart from the outrageous taxes, is the fact that to get to an event we often have to traverse more than one or two countries! So campaign planning is very important indeed. Of course the main goal is the 2009 European Championships in France this September, but due to certain Events changing their minds to what they are they are actually going to run in 2009 we are still pretty uncertain where to get the runs in.
